COMMUNITY POTTERY PROJECT
Last year we contacted Deborah Tompsett a local potter and artist, to see if she would be interested in working on a project for our new building. At the same time with a group of parents we started to think about a theme and what we could do that would involve the children, staff, parents and the local community. With the help of Deborah and suggestions from parents we have decided upon a theme of a huge tree that will cover the interior back wall of the new building. The trunk will be made from old polished wood and the branches and leaves will be painted on.
The tree will be covered in pottery leaves, birds, animals, flowers etc made by the children, staff and parents. We have recently held a community evening where members of local societies came and made pottery pieces that represented their society, for example The British Legion made some fantastic poppies and Rev. Mason made a dove, church and star.
Deborah is a very inspiring person to work with showing how to work with clay. Over the next few months parents and children will make their own pieces. Once finished not only will the tree look fantastic but will also be our new logo for the pre school.
Another couple of projects that Deborah is also running are; a felt rug to represent the roots of the tree, a mosaic frame for a parents notice board, a wooden trunk to sand down and paint and some further pottery pieces to represent people that have contributed to our ‘buy a brick’ scheme.
