Rotherfield Village Pre-School

Making it good, for every child, every day

WEEK 1 to 4

WEEK 1 - Monday 24th May - Friday 28th May

Monday 24th May 2010

The builders have arrived!  And what an impression they have made already!  The Portacabins are in place in the village hall car park and the green JCB has moved in and made a good start on demolishing the building where we used to store some of our outside equipment.

Tuesday 25th May 2010

Today we meet Steve, the Project Manager, and saw the JCB continue to demolish the Storage Building.  There’s not much left of it now - only a pile of bricks and rubble!  While playing on the lower field, the children were inspired to make their own Pre-School using the sand, toy diggers and anything else they could find.  There was a lot of discussion on whether it looked right and was good enough.  And one very optimistic child was rather disappointed that the builders hadn’t finished the Pre-School by home time!

Wednesday 26th May 2010

The rubble has been cleared and the outline of the building has been marked out.  In the photos, the curved edge of the outside terraced play area can be seen.

WEEK 2 - Monday 31st May - Friday 4th June

Thursday 3rd June 2010

While we have been away enjoying our half term break, the builders have continued to make progress.  Although it might not look much from the photo, there are actually many trenches dug ready for the foundations.  Each one, of course, have to be carefully measured using their surveying equipment to make sure it is in the right place.

WEEK 3 - Monday 7th June - Friday 11th June

Monday 7th June 2010

Building materials have turned up on site.  There seems to be rather a lot of extra soil about too but that has probably come from the very big hole being dug to put that cesspit into!

Wednesday 9th June 2010

The children took a visit to the building site.  We had a letter for the site manager which was posted to us instead of the new premises.  Two boys were very pleased to be able to ‘post’ the letter personally.  There were two diggers working when we got there.  One digger used its caterpillar tracks to climb the big mountain of soil which was very exciting!  We noticed that concrete has been poured into some of the trenches too.

BACK

New Build

Friday 11th June 2010

Pipe work is beginning to be laid and more building materials have arrived.  There is a lot of builders sand, cement and breeze blocks now on site.  The breeze blocks are already being used to build the base of the curved raised terraced area which will be our outside classroom.

WEEK 4 - Monday 14th June - Friday 18th June

Wednesday 16th June 2010

WOW! What a difference a couple of days make!  The foundations for the walls at the entrance end of the building are starting to take shape and most impressive, are the foundations which will support the main playroom which look like they are up to floor level already.  The curved edge of the raised terraced area is growing too.  The space at the end (under the raised terraced area) will be used as storage by the village groups who previously used the storage building that had to be knocked down.  We will also make use of this useful space to store some of our outside equipment which we can then easily take down onto the bottom field to use.

Thursday 17th June 2010

We saw the diggers putting the big mountain of soil back between the breeze block walls that make up the foundations.  The children took photos of the men in their hard hats building the wall.

Friday 18th June 2010

Vicky and Jackie attended a progress meeting today (there will be a meeting of this nature every four weeks).  Vicky has reported back to say that the builders have only 9hrs delay in the build due to bad weather which, at this stage, won’t really have an impact on the completion date.  The timber frame is coming on Monday 5th July and will be up within two weeks after that.  We are going for a Carbon footprint rating of ‘Good’ with the use of solar panels and eco heating system.  The rest of the meeting was about drains, signage and health and safety.
