WEEK 5 - Monday 21st June - Friday 25th June
Monday 21st June 2010
Now the mountain of soil has gone, a better view of the whole site can be seen again!

BACK

Wednesday 23rd June 2010
Scaffolding is starting to go up and the materials to complete the foundations are arriving on site. The wall up close to the Scout hut is going up too. We understand that there is a crane coming onto the site tomorrow, so another exciting day and more things to see very soon!

Thursday 24th June 2010
The crane is here! It arrived very early this morning and was already hard at work when we arrived at the Rec. We were advised to keep our distance today, but that didn’t stop the children being impressed with what they saw! They saw it going ‘higher and higher’. The weather was so good that we spent the whole morning doing our activities on the bottom field in the shade of the tree where we could see the crane in action.
Friday 25th June 2010
The concrete blocks have been put in place to complete the floor of the foundations and the crane has gone.

WEEK 6 - Monday 28th June -Friday 2nd July
Tuesday 29th June 2010
Vicky, Fiona, Gillian and Jackie, today met with the architects to talk about various aspects of the building including floor coverings, kitchen units, lighting, decking material, door entry systems and location of electrical sockets. All these little details are very important to us to make sure everything is just right, even down to the height of the sinks and toilets so we no longer have children balancing on stools to use them! Vicky and Jackie also had the privilege to walk around the site so they could get a better feel of the size of the building. The internal walls have been marked out in red now to show the different rooms and more scaffolding has been put up around the raised decking end of the building.

WEEK 7 - Monday 5th July - Friday 9th July
Tuesday 6th July 2010
We have been informed that the Village Hall Car Park will be closed all day on Thursday. This due to road works being carried out across the car park entrance to connect pipe work, cables etc to services at the main road.
Wednesday 7th July 2010
Not much has changed on site today, but we did see a man using a very noisy piece of machinery which cut grooves into some big blocks. Also round the corner was a digger that wobbled up and down a very steep bit of hill making it smooth. On the way back to to Pre-School, Norman, the Site Manager came out to see some of us. He said that the big crane and a lorry carrying the frame of the building is arriving on Monday! Exciting times!

Friday 2nd July 2010
More scaffolding has gone up. We are expecting the frame of the building to arrive soon and should be up in two weeks. This is the time when developments on site will make their biggest impression. Also can be seen, is the support of the decking area, the continuation of the wall near the Scout Hut and evidence of where pipe work has been laid back towards the main road.

WEEK 8 - Monday 12th July - Friday 16th July
Monday 12th July 2010
All morning we have been keeping an eye on the goings on past the Pre-School windows. We saw the small green dump truck being taken away on the back of a lorry. Others saw some builders walking past. Later in the morning, some of the children and staff went to the site to deliver two parcels for the workmen that came to Pre-School, also hoping to see some action, only to find that the frame is coming tomorrow! We are all eagerly awaiting . . .
Tuesday 13th July 2010
Today’s the day! The lorry with the frame had already arrived by the time Pre-School started at 9am. The unloading of the lorry was delayed for a while without the necessary paperwork with regards to the risk assessment and location of the crane. We all ventured out to have a look at what was going on about 11:15am, just in time to see the lorry making a move into the entrance of the Village Hall car park. Not sure who was most excited, the children or the staff!

Friday 9th July 2010
The work across the entrance of the Village Hall car park has been completed. The base of the walls inside the building are laid out, defining the rooms. We are all looking forward to Monday when the main frame of the building arrives!

. . . and it goes on! Two and half hours later, here are the scenes on site. Two sides of the building are already up! More action expected tomorrow including the arrival of the roof later in the week!

Wednesday 14th July 2010
All the wooden frames for the external walls are up, and at the time of taking the children to the site to have a look at 11:30pm, a lot of the internal walls were up too. It is so lovely to see where the doors and windows are going to be, locate the each room and being able to match them up with the floor plan. Roof tomorrow!

Thursday 15th July 2010
It was very wet and windy last night and a few of us were worried that this would delay things. We took some of the children to see the site again and saw that the roof sections had arrived but hadn’t yet been put in place. The builders were rather amused by one of the children saying the crane driver was asleep in his cab! He was just waiting while the others were in discussion in the Portacabin.
The site was revisited later and as of 2pm, unfortunately, no progress had been made. This was not due to the weather as feared but due to some other minor problems arising and they were hoping to make a start very soon.
It was reported later this afternoon, that after attempting to lift the roof pieces, the wind was too strong to move them safely. Let’s hope the wind drops soon.

Friday 16th July 2010
Our four week progress meeting was this morning. The contractors reported that the timber frame is progressing well and the roofing, electrics and brickwork are imminent. There has been no further significant delays and the completion date is still anticipated to be Friday 5th November.
The wooden frame of the roof has been put in place and at the end of the day, the crane left the site.
